The time to create your spring reading list is fast approaching. We know it can be difficult to find Black Christian authors to stock your bookshelves. Even avid readers can have difficulty finding new, fresh voices of color in Christian literature. This list highlights a few black christian authors in various book genres that provide diverse perspectives on christianity in the modern era.

1. Priscilla Shirer

Shirer is not only a Best-selling author but also the founder of Going Beyond Ministries. Her ministry has produced numerous conferences, bible studies, and even films. Shirer stars in most of these films, such as the emotional drama “War Room” from 2015. Her award-winning books range from fiction Christian books to biblical studies. This includes a teenage fantasy series, The Prince Warriors, a dozen bible studies, and women’s books like Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer (which won the 2016 Christian Book of the Year).

2. Trillia Newbell

Trillia Newbell is the author of numerous black Christian books focusing on bible study, faith, and family. She has also edited and written for many multi-author books like Faithful, which explores the stories of women in the Bible. Newbell  has four beautifully illustrated children’s books: God’s Very Good Idea, Creative God, Colorful Us, Jesus and the Gift of Friendship, and The Big Wide Welcome. Her book Enjoy highlights reveling in the daily delights God has given us.

3. Stacy Hawkins Adams

Adams began her career as a newspaper reporter. After a decade of reporting and some freelance work, she started writing novels. Adams primarily writes contemporary women’s fiction about personal growth and seeking everyday joy. She currently has 12 works, including 9 women’s fiction novels, a compilation of inspirational quotes, a devotional book, and most recently, a single poem titled The Pivot. 7. Kimerbla Lawson Roby

Roby is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author known for her contemporary women’s fiction novels that delve into serious issues such as racial and gender discrimination in the workplace and domestic violence. She has 29 titles and published her first nonfiction book, The Woman God Created You to Be, in 2020. Roby also hosts a companion podcast to the book. Her most recent Christian fiction novel, Sister Friends Forever, follows “four lifelong friends as each faces a crisis in family, love, and forgiveness.”

8. Osheta Moore

Moore, spending years living in the back and forwarth of so many opposing views found purpose maintaining a life in Shalom or peace. Moore discovered life is too complex to be separated into black and white. There are shades of gray. She is the author of Dear White Peacemakers: Dismantling Racism with Grit and Grace.” In her own words, “Rooted in the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus, this book is a challenging call to transform white shame, fragility, saviorism, and privilege, in order to work together to build the Beloved Community as anti-racism peacemakers.” When Moore isn’t authoring culture shifting books, she is hosting the Shalom Sistahs podcast and pastoring Roots Moravian Church in Saint Paul, MN.

4. Vanessa Riley

The hidden histories of Black women are explored and given voice by Riley in her numerous black Christian historical fiction novels. Her stories showcase strong sisterhood and multicultural communities, primarily in the Regency era. Riley’s Trinidadian heritage and a love of world history inspired her to pursue writing over engineering. Her best-selling novel, Island Queen, depicts the story of Dorothy “Doll” Kirwan Thomas, “who rose from slavery to become the wealthiest woman in the 1800’s Caribbean.”

5. Pat G’Orge-Walker

As a Christian comedian, Walker found a talent for writing romantic comedies. Her books about black spirituality delve into taboo topics largely unsaid by the church or secular community. Raised by a Baptist father and Pentecostal mother, Walker has decades of experience with church folk antics. While leaving audiences in stitches, she never dilutes or undermines the gospel in her novels. Her Sister Betty series began her career, and Sister Betty Says I Do is a hilarious romp sure to delight even the most serious reader.

6. Tyora Moody

Moody specializes in soul-searching mysteries and suspense novels. Her works range from cozy reads to police procedural, along with mystery romance. Her relatable charm undoubtedly translates into her books. The Serena Manchester series follows a female detective solving crimes in her hometown. Double Mocha Blues is the first book in her cozy Joss Miller Mysteries series.
